Composed around the time of his disastrous marriage, Tchaikovsky's fourth symphony owes much of its fascination with the inescapability of fate to the composer's deep reaction to a performance of Bizet's Carmen. This performance was captured live in Paris, the music being truly in the blood of its performers.
