Vaughan Williams: Symphonies Nos 5 & 9

At its 1943 premiere Vaughan Williams’s mighty Symphony No 5 bravely proffered a ray of hope to a world torn by war, its bittersweet melodies and transcendent climax offering a longed-for vision of future peace. It is performed here alongside the more darkly nuanced Symphony No 9 composed in the final year of the composer’s life.
