Beethoven's Piano Concerto No 2 in B flat major—so numbered because it was published after the later Concerto No 1—is believed to be the work with which Beethoven so decisively asserted his dominance over the Viennese music scene in 1795. Hearing this new recording from Maria João Pires one can understand why.
