Mendelssohn’s precocious ‘double concertos’ (composed when he was just fifteen years old) may lack the mature perfection of, say, the E minor violin concerto or the G and D minor piano concertos, but they are generously filled with an ebullient optimism and élan, characteristics very much to the fore in these performances from Stephen Coombs and Ian Munro: ‘The sheer joy of playing this music bubbles over in every measure’ (American Record Guide).
