Another distinctive feature appears when the unusual phrase structure is perceived. Although the pavan is a ‘16-bar’ work, only the first two strains (and their ornamented repeats) are of orthodox length since the third strain and its repeat curiously last 18 semibreves each, thereby adding 4 semibreves to the normal structure. This would seem to confirm that the work is not conceived as music for dancing. Since the six sections last exactly 100 semibreves rather than the more normal 96, it may be noted that Byrd just manages to satisfy the rule, explained by Morley, that in pavans and galliards ‘you must cast your musicke by foure, so that if you keepe that rule it is no matter how many foures you put in your straine, for it will fall out well enough in the ende’ (PEIPM, p 181). Certainly, this work falls out well enough in the end, from all points of view, and is one of Byrd’s most satisfying.

L’une des particularités de la pavane apparaît à l’examen de la structure des phrases. Bien qu’elle soit “à seize”, seules les deux premières strophes (et leurs reprises variées) sont de longueur orthodoxe. La troisième strophe et sa reprise comportent dix-huit semi-brèves chacune, ce qui ajoute quatre semi-brèves à la structure générale. Ceci pourrait confirmer que l’œuvre n’est pas destinée à la danse. Puisque les six sections de l’œuvre durent exactement cent semi-brèves (et non pas les quatre-vingt-seize habituelles), Byrd arrive tout juste à satisfaire à la règle de Morley selon laquelle, dans les pavanes et gaillardes, “vous devez concevoir votre musique par groupes de quatre semi-brèves ; si vous suivez cette règle, peu importe le nombre de groupes de quatre que vous mettez dans votre strophe, car tout tombera bien à la fin” (PEIPM, p. 181). Certes, cette pavane tombe assez bien à la fin, à tous points de vue. Elle est l’une de plus satisfaisantes de Byrd.
