Fauré’s experiences in the Franco-Prussian conflict of 1870-71 had left him with a horror of war; by 1915 his younger son, Philippe, had enlisted to fight in World War I. In Nocturne No 12 in E minor, despite the flowing tempo and sensually half-lit colours, darkness and anxiety are never far away. It was first conceived as a barcarolle—Fauré changed the title—and its technical challenges are reflected in its dedication to the young pianist Robert Lortat, who had astonished the composer by performing to him, from memory, all of Fauré’s piano music to date.
