In the deceptively decorative E flat major twelfth barcarolle, either Fauré was unusually nostalgic for the charm of his early barcarolles, or, as Nectoux suggests, it may have been sketched much earlier than its supposed date of 1915. Saint-Saëns, who was often perplexed by his former pupil’s late style, had a particular fondness for it.
