Fauré once said that plainchant was the only church music of which he truly approved. The modal leaning of the alto melody in Fauré’s ninth barcarolle (1908-09) has an appropriately plangent, chant-like quality. Rocking rhythms raise the music above the gravitational force of the falling minor third to which the melody is continually pulled back—and which finally triumphs.
