In the G major second barcarolle, roughly contemporaneous with Fauré’s impassioned Piano Quartet No 2, the impact of Saint-Saëns and Liszt is clear in a questing harmonic and textural world. Wagner’s influence on Fauré was relatively limited, yet this substantial piece turns almost Tristan-esque with continual, unresolving modulations.
