The A minor Barcarolle No 1 is a perfect example of that tenor-register song with multi-layered accompaniment. The simple melody grows increasingly inventive; the middle section features clever cross-rhythms and fountains of arpeggios before the main theme returns. It was first performed in 1882 by Saint-Saëns.
