The album of seventeen songs which Schubert put together for Therese Grob in November 1816 contains three songs that were found only in that source. The first of these is a Klage of doubtful authenticity (formerly D512 but exiled in the second edition of Deutsch to the appendix) and the others are on this record—Am ersten Maimorgen and Mailied. Both of these songs are delightful without being very demanding, and both had to wait private publication by Reinhard Van Hoorickx. The opening of Am ersten Maimorgen with its G major tune in ascending thirds and its suggestion of nursery-rhyme simplicity puts us in mind of the Hölty setting Die frühe Liebe earlier in this recital. The poet Claudius (this was probably Schubert's introduction to the north German poet) has an earthy love of the simple joys of life in common with Hölty. Claudius was soon to lead the composer into darker and more profound utterances than this (the next song on this disc is an example) but the merry side of Claudius we hear in this song is just as much a part of Der Wandsbecker Bote ('The Wandsbecker Messenger', the paper Claudius edited and also his nickname) as Der Tod und das Mädchen.
