Pärt has set a number of Psalms over the years, beginning with the strikingly miserable De profundis (No 130) for male voices, organ and percussion in 1980. Subsequent settings include the German An den Wassern (No 137) in 1984, the large-scale Miserere (Psalm 51) in 1989 and Psalms 117 and 131 in Church Slavonic in 1997. Peace upon you, Jerusalem is Pärt’s only English Psalm setting—of Psalm 122—and uses the New Jerusalem Bible translation, with its references to Yahweh for Jehovah and, perhaps deliberate for Pärt, its deviation from the much better-known words of the King James translation, ‘I was glad when they said unto me’, used by Purcell and Parry. In fact, Pärt’s title takes us a stage further from ‘I was glad’ associations, and the words ‘Peace upon you, Jerusalem’ do not actually appear at all in the text.

Pärt made this delightfully fresh and translucently textured setting in 2002 for the outstanding Estonian TV Girls Choir and its conductor Aarne Saluveer. (How many countries in the world, but for a choir-crazy one such as Estonia, would have a choral group allied to its television network?) Throughout, Pärt skilfully investigates different combinations of soprano/alto texture and compass, and yet again pulls off the trick of saying something important through touching simplicity.

Suivront notamment l’An den Wassern allemand (nº 137), en 1984, puis, en 1997, l’imposant Miserere (psaume 51) et les psaumes 117 et 131 en slavon. Peace upon you, Jerusalem est la seule version anglaise d’un psaume mis en musique par Pärt. Il s’agit du texte de la New Jerusalem Bible (psaume 122), avec ses références à Yahweh pour Jehovah et, chose peut-être délibérée de la part de Pärt, sa déviance par rapport aux paroles mieux connues de l’Authorized Version («I was glad when they said unto me», utilisées par Purcell et Parry). Au vrai, le titre de Pärt, dont les mots n’apparaissent absolument pas dans le texte, nous entraîne plus loin que les associations contenues dans «I was glad».

Pärt composa en 2002 cette œuvre délicieusement fraîche, à la texture translucide, pour le remarquable Estonian TV Girls Choir et son chef Aarne Saluveer. (Combien de pays au monde, sinon un pays fondu de chœurs comme l’Estonie, ont un ensemble choral rattaché à leur réseau télévisé?) De bout en bout, Pärt explore habilement différentes combinaisons de texture (soprano/ alto) et d’ambitus, tout en réussissant de nouveau à dire quelque chose d’important avec une simplicité touchante.

Pärt hat im Lauf der Jahre mehrere Psalmen vertont, zuerst das eindringlich klagende De profundis (Nr. 130) für Männerchor, Orgel und Schlagzeug von 1980. Zu späteren Vertonungen gehören An den Wassern (Nr. 137) von 1984, das ausgedehnte Miserere (Psalm 51) von 1989 und Psalmen 117 und 131 in Kirchenslawisch von 1997. Peace upon you, Jerusalem (Psalm 122) ist Pärts einzige englischsprachige Vertonung eines Psalms; hier verwendet er die New Jerusalem Bible-Übersetzung mit der Bezeichnung Yahweh für Jehovah und, vielleicht bewußt, mit der Abweichung von dem viel bekannteren Text in der King James-Übersetzung, „I was glad when they said unto me“ (Ich freute mich, als man mir sagte), den Purcell und Parry vertont haben. Tatsächlich erinnert in Pärts Titel kaum noch etwas an „I was glad“, und die Worte „Peace upon you, Jerusalem“ (Erbittet für Jerusalem Frieden) kommen im Text überhaupt nicht vor.

Pärt schrieb diese wunderbar frische und transparent strukturierte Musik für den hervorragenden Mädchenchor des estnischen Fernsehens und dessen Dirigenten Aarne Saluveer im Jahre 2002. (Wieviele Länder der Welt haben wohl, außer einem so chor-versessenen wie Estland, einen eigenen Fernseh-Chor?) Durchweg untersucht Pärt geschickt verschiedene Kombinationen von Textur und Umfang der Sopran- und Altstimmen, und es gelingt ihm wieder, etwas Wichtiges bewegend einfach zu sagen.
