Originally the elusive Nocturne No 8 in D flat major was one of Fauré’s Huit pièces brèves, Op 84; lasting under three minutes, it has little in common with the other nocturnes. The work’s title was the publisher’s addition, not Fauré’s. Nevertheless, the melody, shining up through purling counterpoint, faintly foreshadows his last nocturne, the towering No 13.
