The two Liszt Elegies belong very much as a pair: the first (with its French title, Première Élégie) having been composed for a concert in memory of Marie Moukhanoff, and the second (with its German title, Zweite Elegie) written for Lina Ramann to thank her for her article about the first one. Both are cast in 3/4, in A flat major. The first also exists in versions for cello, piano, harp and harmonium, for cello and piano, for violin and piano (with optional harmonium), and for piano duet. The second has versions for violin or cello and piano. Both are based on simple, wistful melodies, and both build to impassioned climaxes before trilling their way to rest upon high A flat major chords.

Les deux Élégies de Liszt ne peuvent être séparées: la première (avec son titre français) avait été composée pour un concert à la mémoire de Marie Moukhanoff, et la seconde (avec son titre allemand) avait été écrite pour Lina Ramann pour la remercier de son article au sujet de la première. Toutes deux sont en 3/4, toutes deux en la bémol majeur. La première existe aussi en variantes pour violoncelle, piano, harpe et harmonium, pour violoncelle et piano, pour violon et piano (avec harmonium facultatif), et pour piano en morceau à quatre mains. La seconde a des variantes pour violon ou violoncelle et piano. Toutes deux ont pour bases de simples et pensives mélodies, qui s’intensifient jusqu’à une apogée avant de redescendre en trilles pour finir sur de hauts accords en si bémol majeur.

Die beiden Elegien von Liszt sind durchaus als Paar anzusehen: Die erste (mit französischem Titel) wurde für ein Konzert zum Andenken an die Gräfin Moukhanoff geschrieben, die zweite (mit dem deutschen Titel) als Dank an Lina Ramann für ihren Artikel über die erste Elegie. Beide stehen im 3/4-Takt in As-Dur. Von der ersten liegen auch Versionen für Cello, Klavier, Harfe und Harmonium, für Cello und Klaviert, für Violine und Klavier (wahlweise auch Harmonium) sowie für Klavierduett vor. Die zweite Elegie gibt es in Fassungen für Violine oder Cello und Klavier. Beide beruhen auf schlichten, wehmütigen Melodien, und beide steigern sich zu leidenschaftlichen Höhepunkten, ehe sie trillernd in hohen As-Dur-Akkorden ausklingen.
