In 2012 Ex Cathedra and Jeffrey Skidmore stunned a packed Sherborne Abbey with the premiere of Alec Roth's A Time to Dance; now at last they have recorded this vivacious cantata for all to hear—and enjoy. Over one hundred years before Bach, a Florentine music theorist set out to discover what would happen if you tried to play the same instrument in all the possible 'keys' (as we now call them). Vincenzo Galilei's Well-tempered Lute is Žak Ozmo's revelatory journey in his footsteps.
Three contrasting releases from Signum Classics this month bring us the NYCoS National Girls Choir in Only a Singing Bird, a recital of songs by Michael Head and others accompanied by pianist Philip Moore and conducted by Christopher Bell. Elena Xanthoudakis has recorded a programme of 'German romantic rarities for soprano, clarinet and piano' entitled The Captive Nightingale, Jason Xanthoudakis and Clemens Leske equally relishing the discoveries from composers including Andreas Späth, Heinrich Proch, Jan Křtitel Václav Kalivoda, Franz Paul Lachner and Peter von Lindpaintner. Alessio Bax has compiled Lullabies for Mila, a selection of soothing piano classics taken from his acclaimed earlier recordings.
