October 2015 Releases

Hyperion's Record of the Month for October 2015 presents new recordings of Janáček & Smetana String Quartets. Embracing the panoply of human experience within this most personal of genres, Janáček's two quartets and Smetana's first ('From my life') here have their narratives told as never before by an effervescent Takács Quartet.

Composed in what turned out to be the last couple of years of his tragically short life, the Schubert Impromptus & Piano pieces (D935 & D946) are large-scale works—miniature sonatas even. Steven Osborne presents them in performances of perfect classical poise, concluding his programme with the earlier, and altogether lighter, Hüttenbrenner Variations. A seventh volume in our Romantic Cello Concerto series welcomes back the hugely charismatic cello of Alban Gerhardt, enthusiastic orchestral support coming from Hyperion debutant Stefan Blunier and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. The two Cello Concertos by Wilhelm Fitzenhagen are joined by two of the composer's shorter works in the genre, plus his version of the famous Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations.

Bass-voice virtuoso Matthew Rose has teamed up with Arcangelo and Jonathan Cohen to bring us Arias for Benucci. Mozart's first Figaro, Francesco Benucci, must have been quite a character, and these performances—of arias by Salieri, Martín y Soler and Sarti as well as by Mozart himself—shed a fascinating light on this most exciting of times in the history of opera. Rupert Gough and his elite Royal Holloway Choir have recorded Calm on the listening ear of night & other choral works by René Clausen & Stephen Paulus. These composers, from the heart of the thriving American Midwest choral tradition, weave the most wonderful of textures from the human voice and with performances like these are sure to win new friends.

A live recording made at the Salzburg Festival last year finds Christoph von Dohnányi conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra in Bruckner Symphony No 9; and pianist-provocateur James Rhodes has put together a 'mix tape' of his personal favourite recordings entitled Inside tracks.

Voces 8 and Les Inventions present the first recording of a fascinating selection of Psalms by Benedetto Marcello in their English versions by Charles Avison. A further premiere recording comes from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment with Jonathan Williams' restoration of the 1754 Anacréon by Rameau (he wrote two of them). Classical Opera and Ian Page, meanwhile, continue their enterprising cycle with Mozart Il re pastore: a joy.
