Solo piano Études by Debussy, Bartók & Prokofiev have captured the attention of Garrick Ohlsson; the three sets presented here were composed around the same time as Gurre-Lieder and encompass as wide a response to their genre. A recording of Songs by Tomášek is a rare event; Renata Pokupić and Roger Vignoles perform twenty-eight in a recital that should win this neglected figure new friends. Finally from Hyperion this month, the award-winning Cinquecento has recorded a programme of Lassus Missa super Dixit Joseph & motets: Renaissance polyphony at its best.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Will Todd was composed in 2012. Hugely popular with kids of all ages, and now in its third season, it has been recorded for Signum Classics by the irrepressible Opera Holland Park. The BBC Singers and David Hill give thrilling performances of The Angry Planet & other choral works by Bob Chilcott. The title work, an 'Environmental Cantata' commissioned for the BBC Proms, is presented alongside the smaller-scale Five days that changed the world and The Miracle of Spring.
Also available from Signum this month are Mahler Symphonies Nos 7, 8 & 9 in resplendent live recordings from 2011. The late Lorin Maazel conducts an ebullient Philharmonia Orchestra. Finally, Jamie Walton enlists the support of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Okku Kamu for Works for cello & orchestra by Glazunov, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky, several of them surprisingly little known.
