The Nash Ensemble has returned to the studio to bring us a delectable programme of American chamber music by Herrmann, Gershwin, Waxman & Copland, at its heart the wonderful Souvenirs de voyage by Bernard Herrmann and Gershwin's own piano arrangements of 'songs from the shows'. Christopher Herrick sparkles in Power of Life, a showcase for the wonders of the new Metzler organ at Poblet Monastery and an exploration of some of the more unusual byways of the repertoire. Classical control, on the other hand, is to the fore in a new album from Arcangelo and Jonathan Cohen: masterful performances of Mozart Concertos & Haydn Sinfonia concertante bring out the very best from soloists Ilya Gringolts, Nicolas Altstaedt, Alfredo Bernardini and Peter Whelan.
There are two new releases from Signum Classics this month. The Armonico Consort throws its inimitable youthful spirit into Purcell Dido & Aeneas. Christopher Monks directs his inspired soloists and band through this most characterful masterpiece of Restoration libertarianism. Malcolm Martineau quietly supervises the final release in his Complete Poulenc Songs edition, Thomas Allen and Ann Murray heading up an extensive array of singers and instrumentalists.
