May 2015 Releases

Five contrasting new releases from Hyperion this month, and two of them feature the multi-talented Stephen Hough. As consummate pianist Stephen has recorded twenty-seven Grieg Lyric Pieces, these our Record of the Month for May 2015, while his Missa Mirabilis is coupled with the Vaughan Williams Dona nobis pacem in a thought-provoking new recording from Andrew Litton and the Colorado Symphony. The soloists are Sarah Fox and Christopher Maltman.

Our Romantic Piano Concerto series reaches Volume 65 with Melani Mestre, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Martyn Brabbins laughing their way through Albéniz & Granados Piano Concertos. Retirement age for the series?—don't worry, the "in preparation" silo is as full as ever! L'heure exquise—A French Songbook presents that doyenne of mezzo-sopranos Alice Coote with the perfect opportunity to explore the repertoire of French love song with Graham Johnson, while Stephen Rice and The Brabant Ensemble have unearthed a real treasure in Jacquet of Mantua, the Mass and motets recorded here suggesting a seriously under-rated composer.

Signum Classics logo

Paul McCreesh brings his masterful Gabrieli Consort & Players back to the studios of Signum Classics for a new recording of Handel L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato, their first Handel album for over a decade. Tamsin Waley-Cohen has recorded Soli—Works for solo violin featuring Bartók's challenging Sonata for solo violin alongside diverse shorter works. William Bird's Oriental Miscellany of 1789 brings the indigenous tunes of Hindustan into the improbable setting an English harpsichord-equipped parlour. Jane Chapman mediates at the keyboard.

Signum Classics logo

Also for Signum the BBC Singers and David Hill have recorded Choral works by Judith Weir, a programme encompassing two decades of the new Master of the Queen's Music's output. For the title work Storm they are joined by the ensemble Endymion and the Choristers of the Temple Church. Il Trionfo di Dori is an inspiring collection of twenty-nine madrigals, each by a different composer and poet—a Venetian nobleman's profession of love for his wife which is here tenderly performed by The King's Singers.
