April 2015 Releases

Hyperion's Record of the Month for April 2015 presents thrilling performances of the Shostakovich Piano Quintet & String Quartet No 2. The Takács Quartet is electrifying, and is joined for the quintet by Marc-André Hamelin who has also recorded a double album of Mozart Piano Sonatas, a complement to his hugely successful Haydn albums.

Two established series receive new stablemates this month: from Howard Shelley we have a third instalment of The Complete Mendelssohn Solo Piano Music, while volume seven of The Complete Strauss Songs focuses on the juvenilia; the ever-attentive Roger Vignoles is joined by Ruby Hughes, Ben Johnson and Günter Haumer.

The Choral Music of Kenneth Leighton is extraordinary, and not just for the disjunct between choirs wanting to perform it and record-buyers wanting to hear it. But when it is done right, and here it really is by Trinity College Choir Cambridge and Stephen Layton, it is glorious.

Oliver Davis' Flight is a treat. This new album from Signum Classics showcases violin works by the popular ballet and TV composer in vibrant performances by their dedicatee Kerenza Peacock. The label's commitment to contemporary music of all kinds is further displayed in The twenty-fifth hour—Chamber music by Thomas Adès, where the composer joins the eminent Calder Quartet in definitive renditions of three up-and-coming classics of the genre, and in the Chilcott St John Passion, a modern-day re-imagining of the traditional form spiritedly performed by the massed forces of Wells Cathedral Choir.
