September 2014 Releases
Our Record of the Month for September 2014 is a glorious showcase for mezzo-soprano Alice Coote: eleven sublime Handel Arias with inspirational support from Harry Bicket and The English Concert, making their Hyperion debut. A fifth volume in our Complete Brahms Songs series finds Christopher Maltman and Graham Johnson revealing the neglected wonders of the Magelone-Romanzen. Westminster Cathedral Choir has recorded the three Byrd Masses, the Tudor masterpieces this choir did so much to restore to the repertoire a hundred years ago; Martin Baker conducts.
Natalie Clein has been in the studio with the two Saint-Saëns Cello Concertos: a fifth volume in our Romantic Cello Concerto series, Andrew Manze here conducts the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. From Steven Osborne this month we have an arresting new recording of Medtner & Rachmaninov Piano Sonatas.
A new recording from LSO Live features Brahms Symphonies Nos 3 & 4, Valery Gergiev and the London Symphony Orchestra completing their cycle in triumphant style. From Linn we have a fascinating premiere: Fauré's Vocalises (vocal exercises dating from his time as director of the Paris Conservatoire) have been realized for trumpet and piano by Jonathan Freeman-Attwood and Roy Howat.
