July 2014 Releases
Alina Ibragimova and Steven Osborne grip audiences with their passionate live performances of uncompromising intelligence, and Hyperion is now delighted to present their first recording together: the expressive Prokofiev Violin Sonatas make an inspirational Record of the Month for July 2014.
We also have three new recordings to delight piano-lovers. Angela Hewitt is supported by Hannu Lintu and the National Arts Centre Orchestra in sparkling renditions of Mozart Piano Concertos Nos 22 & 24. Howard Shelley appears as soloist and conductor, of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, in the two Godard Piano Concertos (volume 63 in our Romantic Piano Concerto series) and has also recorded a second instalment of Mendelssohn Solo Piano Music.
Newly available for download from Hyperion is a good range of 16- and 24-bit recordings from LSO Live—the London Symphony Orchestra's own label. Alongside a treasure trove of a catalogue, there's a new release of five of the finest Haydn Symphonies, among the final recordings made under the direction of the much-lamented Sir Colin Davis.
Re-issued on Helios this month are the forty-five Bridge Songs, lovingly recorded by Janice Watson, Louise Winter, Jamie MacDougall, Gerald Finley and Roger Vignoles, the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet's premiere recording of the first two Stanford String Quartets, and, from Martyn Brabbins and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the lushly romantic Music from Behind the lines by Cecil Coles, one of the most talented—yet forgotten—composer-casualties of the First World War.
Four exciting new Linn recordings this month. Ensemble Marsyas discovers in the Fasch Quartets and Concertos an enthralling soundworld, while pianist Gottlieb Wallisch has recorded the Haydn London Sonatas. Ace mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill returns in a recital of Mahler Songs (including five by Alma), warmly accompanied by Simon Lepper, and Scottish folk legend Dougie MacLean presents Till tomorrow, this new album opulently recorded with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and John Logan.
