May 2014 Releases
A new album from Stephen Hough is always an event: comprising Chopin Nocturnes, the 'Moonlight' Sonata and Schumann's epic Carnaval, In the Night also includes Hough's own Piano Sonata No 2 and is Hyperion's Record of the Month for May 2014. Danny Driver has recorded the Handel Eight Great Suites, these further pinnacles of the keyboard repertoire enthralling in their luminescent Steinway detail.
Leslie Howard has joined forces with Rita Manning, Morgan Goff and Justin Pearson to record the two Rubinstein Piano Quartets. Two? The 'other' one is the composer's own ingenious transcription of his Quintet for piano and winds. The Violin Sonatas by Pizzetti and Castelnuovo-Tedesco are performed by Hagai Shaham and Arnon Erez, this master-to-pupil coupling leading us through a fascinating period of transition in Italian composition.
Reissued this month are Kathryn Stott's seminal Complete Fauré Piano Music, an electrically charged Bruckner Symphony No 3 from Osmo Vänskä and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and the Complete Duruflé Organ Music performed by John Scott on the organ of St Paul's Cathedral in London.
From Linn and The Avison Ensemble we have Corelli's Church Sonatas, Opp 3 & 6, the concluding volume in this comprehensive tercentennial survey. 1equalmusic continues its theme of four hands at one piano with Duo Bohêmes' Harmonies d'un Soir—an ear-opening journey that begins in a Bohemian forest and ends with transilient echoes of India.
