February 2014 Releases

Hyperion's Record of the Month for February 2014 comes from the vocal and instrumental virtuosi who comprise Arcangelo: emotionally charged Monteverdi Madrigals of Love and Loss are directed by Jonathan Cohen, with guest soloist James Gilchrist. Isolation and yearning also permeate Schubert Der Wanderer, a bewitching programme of nineteen songs from Florian Boesch and Roger Vignoles, masters both of the genre.

Martyn Brabbins and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales have recorded the two complete Zemlinsky Symphonies: audacious works from a headstrong youth wrestling the gulf between Brahms and the next generation, perhaps; thrilling to hear, most certainly. Dating from the succeeding couple of decades, the Szymanowski Masques, Métopes & Études are here recorded by acclaimed pianist Cédric Tiberghien, and the Kodály String Quartets receive driven performances from the Dante Quartet.
