August 2013 Releases

Our Record of the Month for August 2013 is fantastic: Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien perform the Complete Schubert for violin and piano across a double album ranging from the three 1816 'Sonatinas' to the masterpiece that is the Fantasy of 1827. Performances and recording are exemplary.

Two further new Hyperion recordings this month bring very different choral repertoire to the catalogue. Stephen Rice and his accomplished Brabant Ensemble have recorded two Masses and some motets by Cipriano de Rore in a rare programme dedicated to the madrigalian master's neglected sacred output. Wells Cathedral Choir presents an extensive survey of Choral works by Judith Bingham; first recordings abound and the full diversity of this composer is apparent, not least through the organ-playing of Jonathan Vaughn and Matthew Owens' inspired direction.

Re-issued this month are Emma Kirkby and Anthony Rooley's seminal Time stands still (perfectly, if lengthily, subtitled 'Lute songs on the theme of mutability and metamorphosis by John Dowland and his contemporaries'), and the two wonderful Rachmaninov Piano Trios in recommended performances from The Moscow Rachmaninov Trio.

Antony Pitts' Jerusalem-Yerushalayim is a new oratorio here receiving its first recording in an electrifying performance by the composer's own crack ensemble Tonus Peregrinus (and a sizeable supporting cast); this is a first offering from the label 1equalmusic.
