The E major Fugue was probably written about the same time as the ‘Six’ (1717) and has a springy arpeggiated subject which glimmers but is hardly celestial. The published ending, wavering in parallel sixths over a dominant pedal, has been dismissed as ‘inauthentic’, and replaced by a Handelian cliché, for better or worse.
