Prelude to Te Deum in D, H146
Charpentier composed an enormous amount of church music, imaginatively scored and with unusually interesting parts for middle voices. Four settings of the Te Deum have survived. This one probably dates from the early 1690s and is scored for trumpets and drums with four-part strings (violin, two violas and bass) doubled by woodwind. The Rondeau theme (made popular as the Eurovision theme tune) is interspersed with two short, contrasting couplets which normally lead directly into the first choral movement.
