As with the earlier publication of Les préludes the impetus was provided by one of Liszt's students, who first made the transcription: Friedrich Spiro. Liszt thoroughly revised the transcription before it was published and, as so often, made some modifications which are not present in any of the other published forms of the work (for orchestra, two pianos, piano duet and piano/violin/cello).
