(‘Homage March’) was composed for the inauguration of Liszt’s friend Prince Carl Alexander. Raff produced an orchestral score which Liszt revised in 1857, and the piano version, with a few corrections, was published in 1858. Liszt returned to the melody of the trio section for his Weimars Volkslied
—a piece which exists in many instrumental and vocal versions, and which he clearly saw as a potential anthem for the principality of Sachsen-Weimar.
