The pavan is a ‘16-bar’ piece, its six sections running to 96 semibreves. The third strain starts on the chord of F major, firmly stressing the Mixolydian G major modality; the galliard takes a slightly different approach, with a surprising middle strain that starts on the chord of E major. The harmonic rhythm is particularly slow, but varied. In the first strain the bass moves firmly by fourths and fifths; in the second strain it descends and then rises in stepwise motion; and in the third it becomes static, effectively preparing the way for the fine, energetic galliard. This movement is somewhat similar stylistically to the third Nevell galliard (BK14b). These are no doubt early works.
