Fauré’s solitary Mazurka (1883) is an early, idiosyncratic tribute to Chopin. The Trio is notably appealing, the nostalgic, over-the-shoulder glance at a revered master charming. But it is significant that, unlike Chopin who wrote fifty-eight Mazurkas, Fauré never repeated the experiment.
