The chant antiphon Ante sex dies is one of several antiphons which might have been sung during this procession which, on its return to the church, ended with the Gloria, laus, et honor, a joyful hymn in praise of Christ the King. The refrain ‘Gloria, laus’ is an anonymous setting dating from the seventeenth century to which Francisco António de Almeida added the verses with which it alternates.

Ante sex dies solemnis Paschae,
quando venit Dominus in civitatem Jerusalem,
occurrerunt ei pueri:
et in manibus portabant ramos palmarum,
et clamabant voce magna dicentes:
Hosanna in excelsis:
benedictus qui venisti
in multitudine misericordiae tuae.
Hosanna in excelsis.
Let us depart in peace.
In the name of Christ, Amen.
Six days before the feast of the Passover,
when the Lord came to the city of Jerusalem,
children ran to him:
and in their hands they carried branches of palm,
and they shouted at the tops of their voices saying:
Hosanna in the highest:
blessed are you who come
in the fullness of mercy.
Hosanna in the highest.
