Far, far from each other
At the end of the first line the song has ‘flown’ where Arnold wrote ‘grown’, a much more down-to-earth and realistic word. The poem is not concerned with Fanny Wightman, but with ‘Marguerite’ (Mary Claude of Ambleside), whom the poet had met in Switzerland in 1848, and describes his changed feelings when they met again the following year. (These lines come near the end of a poem of ninety lines.)
