Clos ta paupière
The song Clos ta paupière (1875) was originally published in English as Peacefully Slumber (1873). It is here given in the ubiquitous Jules Barbier’s French adaption. The composer excelled in lullabies and cradle songs and this simple and tender music is quintessential Gounod, striking just the right note to depict the radiance of motherhood and the naivety of the nursery. The song is dedicated to his son Jean. In 1875 Gounod also arranged the piece as a Berceuse for violin and piano.
