sets a poem by Guillot de Saix whose name we find at the end of the second Recueil
in one of Hahn’s worst songs, La douce paix
, an overblown thanksgiving for the end of the First World War. Here the same poet treating the same theme leaves bombast behind and inspires the composer to write one of his most simple and touching songs. The image of a nightingale singing of peace seems to touch the composer (and therefore us) far more than the visions of massed choirs evoked in the larger song.
