The A minor Prelude and Fugue, BWV543, dating from the later Weimar years (1716/7), shows how confidently Bach has built on the typical devices of Buxtehude, pacing the incident to ensure forward momentum and tightening the progression of the rich harmony. The extensive dance fugue that follows not only dissolves in a showy virtuoso flourish, but the pedal part is exceptionally active throughout, though not as markedly so as in the D major Prelude and Fugue, BWV532.
