Trio Sonata in D minor, BWV527

composer
circa 1727

The fugal opening of the D minor sonata has a poise hard to relate to music other than Bach’s chamber sonatas. One might find something like this in, say, a flute or gamba sonata, but not in the Italian composers he so admired. The graceful and sweet (‘dolce’) middle movement encourages players new to the set to think that the sonata is the ‘easiest’, but a few bars of the fugal finale soon change that impression. This movement also belongs among string trios.

from notes by Peter Williams © 1990
