Trio Sonata in E minor, BWV528

composer
circa 1727

The E minor Sonata begins with an Introduction and Vivace transcribed from Cantata No 76 (oboe d’amore, gamba, continuo) – the whole movement short and preface-like, as indeed it is in the cantata. The Andante has all the hallmarks of early Bach, something written in his early twenties, a sweet, rather moving melody, short-breathed and repetitive, but very touching. The fugal finale is in a more mature style, elegant and intricate.

from notes by Peter Williams © 1990
