Trio Sonata in C minor, BWV526

composer
circa 1727

The ‘Vivace’ heading at the beginning of the C minor sonata, could well suggest that some of the other movements in the set should not be played too fast, for, judging by his arrangements of Vivaldi concertos, Bach had a fairly sedate idea of Italian style. The lyricism of the Largo movement is no longer there in the finale, whose fugue-theme and treatment appear to be rather old-fashioned until the perky ‘second subject’ appears.

from notes by Peter Williams © 1990
