Herr Jesu Christ, dich zu uns wend, BWV655

1708/17; revised into Leipzig Chorales collection, the '18' circa 1744/7

In Leipzig, as the priest stood in the pulpit preparing to deliver his sermon, the chorale on which this prelude is based was sung, a prayer that the Holy Spirit might be present to reveal the way to truth. It is likely that the prelude would have been played as the priest made his way to the pulpit, and would have been followed by a performance of the chorale. This setting is a lively trio movement, with the chorale melody appearing in the pedals near the end.

from notes by Ian Carson 1996
