O Lamm Gottes, unschuldig, BWV656

composer
1708/17; revised into Leipzig Chorales collection, the '18' circa 1744/7

The chorale text paraphrases the Agnus Dei from the Mass, and is in three verses, which Bach follows in this setting in triple time. In the first verse the soprano line has the melody, which moves to the alto in the second. The pedal enters with the melody in the third verse, and although aspects of the writing can be tied to phrases from the text, this music is the Lamb of God triumphant.

from notes by Ian Carson 1996
