Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten, BWV647

composer
circa 1748/9; Schübler Chorale No 3; arrangement of Cantata 93 movement 4

This and the following prelude form a pair in their sombre writing, contrasting with the running figures of the first two. Both are vocal duets in their cantata versions.

The cantata in which this chorale appeared (No 93) was first sung on the fifth Sunday after Trinity, 1724. It sets the fourth verse, which proclaims that he who trusts in God ‘knows the right season for joy’. It has two imitative obbligato parts, and the chorale melody is in the alto.
