The compleat virtuoso, Op 366
The Compleat Virtuoso (Op 366) was ‘dedicated to Stanford‘s friends, the great violinists of Europe’. ‘This plagiarism’, Stanford added, ‘is almost too obvious; “it ceases to be plagiarism and becomes quotation”. A very little investigation revealed the fact that this work is really a composition by the famous Max van Beetelssohn’. This amusing miniature quotes freely from the concertos of Mendelssohn, Beethoven, and Bruch, works which Stanford conducted on many occasions with numerous virtuosi, though one suspects that Joachim was the principal dedicatee.
