Christus ist des Gesetzes Ende
EnglishFrançaisDeutsch
A mourning motet by Schelle is the large-scale double-choir setting of Christus ist des Gesetzes Ende (‘Christ is the law’s end’). The work was written for the funeral of the Leipzig citizen Gottfried Egger on 13 July 1684. The composition stands in the tradition of the Middle German motet as it was cultivated, amongst others, by Schelle’s teacher Heinrich Schütz and his predecessors Hermann Schein and Tobias Michael.
