Orfa 'Grande polka', RO186 Op 71
EnglishFrançaisDeutsch
As well as his Louisiana pieces and Cuban dances, Gottschalk wrote sentimental potboilers, as well as waltzes, mazurkas and polkas, in the popular salon genre. Orfa is a spirited example of the latter. Others in the same vein are the Polka in A flat, Polka in B flat, and Caprice-Polka (all CD 2), the Forest Glade Polka and La Colombe (both CD 4) as well as the Polka de salon and Rayons d’azur. Writing of the piano duet arrangement of Orfa, the pianist Eugene List describes the middle section as ‘an imaginary euphonium solo, as though from a band concert in the distance’. The significance of the title is unknown.
