Gottschalk's melody
EnglishFrançaisDeutsch
There are over one hundred works by Gottschalk which have been identified but have no scores extant. This is just one that has come to light, a nocturne-like piece in D flat (68) described as ‘one of Gottschalk’s Melodies composed when in Havana in ’53’. A photocopy of the manuscript in Gottschalk’s hand was given to Philip Martin by a nun during a meeting of the Sonneck Society, formed to promote and discuss American music, at Keele University in the early 1980s. The Sister had founded her own American Music Research Center at the Dominican College at San Rafael, California, and had unearthed this little gem.
