The Manchineel Tree (‘a tropical American tree with poisonous latex’) provided the inspiration for the fourth of his Parisian ‘hits’, though this was not published until 1851. Like Bamboula, Le Bananier and La Savane it draws on Gottschalk’s reminiscences of his New Orleans childhood.
