Madeleine 'Étude', RO140
EnglishFrançaisDeutsch
This unusual and haunting study was dedicated by Gottschalk ‘for the album of my old friend and companion from Paris, Achille Arnaud, with fond memories’. Its wistful tenor theme under continuous semiquaver triplets is one of Gottschalk’s loveliest and most memorable. (The title page spells the name as above; the cover of the music lists it as ‘Madelaine’.)
