Love and chivalry 'Caprice élégant en forme de schottisch', RO135
EnglishFrançaisDeutsch
‘Love and Chivalry’ is another product of Matouba and the summer of 1859. Its two simple themes are as catchy as those of Fairy Land and Hurrah Galop, the second of these themes accomplished by a straightforward passage for crossed hands. A schottische (or schottisch), incidentally, for those unfamiliar with nineteenth-century terpsichorean nomenclature, is a type of ballroom dance similar to and slower than the polka, known in England as a ‘German polka’. It developed from the écossaise, originally a quick Scottish dance in 24 time, stylized examples of which occur in Beethoven, Schubert and Chopin.
