Vicars' Close

First line:
Praise the Lord of heaven

The Rt Rev Timothy Dudley-Smith is widely recognized as one of our leading hymn-writers, with a broad appeal across party and denominational boundaries. He was associated with the group around the Rt Rev Michael Baughen, Vicar at that time of Holy Trinity Platt Fields, Manchester, which in 1966 and 1969 produced Youth Praise I and II, initially for his work with young people in the parish. This was where Timothy Dudley-Smith’s best-known hymn ‘Tell out my soul the greatness of the Lord’ first appeared. The group moved on to work on the psalms. This is a metrical version of Psalm 148, calling on all creation to worship God. The broadness and directness of the theme needs to be answered by a tune such as this that is enjoyable to sing. Malcolm Archer is the organist of Wells Cathedral, and Vicars’ Close is a beautiful group of medieval buildings on the north side of the building.
